Vitamin C Serums for Acne Marks

By the BestCSerum editorial team · Updated 2 October 2026 · How we write and check content

Vitamin C can help brown or dark marks left after acne fade faster, because these are caused by extra melanin. Red or pink marks are mostly about blood vessels and inflammation and respond less to vitamin C. Treat active acne first, otherwise new marks keep forming.

Brown marks versus red marks

Brown marks after a breakout are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is common in Indian skin tones. Vitamin C's effect on melanin production makes it a reasonable option for these. Red marks usually fade on their own over time and are less likely to respond to vitamin C.

Acne scars that change the skin's surface, such as pits or depressions, are a different problem that serums cannot fix.

Choosing a serum for acne-prone skin

Look for a light, non-oily texture. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is often used in products for acne-prone skin, and L-ascorbic acid works well if your skin tolerates it. If you also use acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide or retinoids, use vitamin C in the morning and the treatment at night; see vitamin C with retinol.

Frequently asked questions

+Can vitamin C be used on active acne?

Vitamin C is not an acne treatment. You can use it while treating acne if your skin tolerates it, but stop if it stings on broken skin.

+How long do acne marks take to fade with vitamin C?

Usually several weeks to a few months of daily use with sunscreen. Deeper marks can take longer.
