Vitamin C Serum with Sunscreen

By the BestCSerum editorial team · Updated 2 October 2026 · How we write and check content

Apply vitamin C first, then moisturiser if you use one, then sunscreen as the final step. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps limit damage from UV-generated free radicals, while sunscreen blocks or absorbs UV. They complement each other, but vitamin C is not a substitute for sunscreen.

Why they pair well

Reviews of topical vitamin C describe it as photoprotective: it helps neutralise free radicals produced when skin is exposed to UV. It does not absorb UV the way sunscreen filters do, so it cannot prevent sunburn on its own. Using both covers different parts of sun damage.

Order and timing

Serum on clean skin, wait about a minute, moisturiser, then sunscreen. Apply enough sunscreen and reapply during long sun exposure. Products that combine vitamin C and SPF exist, but the amount of vitamin C in them is often low, and you still need to apply a generous layer for the SPF to work.

Frequently asked questions

+Can I skip sunscreen if I use vitamin C?

No. Vitamin C does not protect against sunburn. Sunscreen is the main defence against UV damage and pigmentation.

+Can vitamin C serum make skin sensitive to sun?

Vitamin C is not considered photosensitising in the way retinoids or exfoliating acids can be. Sunscreen is still essential, especially if you are treating pigmentation.
